Bonk Breaker Helps Fuel Nationals Wins For LUX / Sideshow Team

This past week was full of success for the LUX / Sideshow Team at the US National Road Championships in Hagerstown, Maryland, where they put on a show of strength in the time trial, road race, and criterium. LUX / Sideshow Team is a junior development program that Bonk Breaker supports and is run by Roy Knickman, a highly-respected former professional cyclist who helped pave the way for Americans racing in Europe during his days on Team 7-Eleven during the late 80s.

LUX / Sideshow Team had riders competing in the male 17-18 and 15-16 age groups, in addition to the female 17-18 group. This is how Knickman described the team’s performance at Nationals.

“The riders put on a tremendous display of strength, tactical awareness and team unity, dominating the 17-18 boy’s events and having great showings in the other age groups.

“LUX riders placed 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th in the 17-18 boys Time Trial. Our 15-16 boys were 2nd, 3rd and 7th.

“In the road race the 17-18 boys rode on the front for 60 miles before putting Sean and Quinn in the winning three-man break. The guys then put two more riders in the four-man chase group. The end result had LUX riders winning from the break, winning the chase group sprint and winning the bunch sprint netting 1st, 3rd, 4th, 7th and 8th.

“In the 15-16s the guys forced a break, putting two riders in the three-man break. The other rider was defending National RR Champion and an excellent sprinter. In the end the boys could not break him and finished 2nd and 3rd, which was still amazing as we only had three riders in the race. And in the 17-18 girl’s race there was a bunch sprint that saw our rider miss the win in a photo finish.

“The criterium saw the 17-18 boys again set up on the front from lap one and use their TT strength to contain any attacks and set up a bunch sprint which our rider Riley won. The 17-18 girls also raced well coming away with a 4th place finish.

“This year we had unprecedented success at the National Championships. I truly believe it was about the years of building our race schedule, rider support and opportunities.”
